Sleepovers by Jacqueline Wilson
A few weeks ago I reviewed The Dinosaur's Packed Lunch the perfect introduction to Jacqueline Wilson and a great book for new readers making the transition from picture books to chapter books.
Recently we've taken Jacqueline Wilson up to the next level with Sleepovers, aimed at readers aged 7+. Although not yet the full-on tween angst fest of Wilsons for older readers, this was most definitely a Jacqueline Wilson. And my daughter and I LOVED it!
It has finally got us back into regular bedtime story reading. In fact we've been reading more than we've ever read before.
Sleepovers is the story of five tween girls who all celebrate their birthdays with a sleepover for their friends. The book focuses particularly on Daisy, the new girl at school, and the reasons why she is worried about having a sleepover at her house.
It is most definitely a girls' book. About girls, for girls and the subject matter is one young girls care about. But, unlike the (in my opinion) inexplicably popular/ borderline vomit-inducing Daisy Meadows fairy books, it is not girly for girly's sake.
The story is real and believable and you really come to care about Daisy and her friends. It is actually so NOT girly that, after eavesdropping on his sister's bedtime story, my 11 year old son borrowed the book and sat down and read it all in one sitting. Followed by the equally brilliant Lizzie Zipmouth.
So this book comes highly recommended by a 6 year old girl, an 11 year old boy AND this 39 year old mummy.

I love Jaqueline Wilson books - I read them years and years ago! :)
Now I feel old. They weren't around when I was a kid! I've been desperate to start reading them, though. Thanks very much for commenting.
I may not be a girl, but I've read several Jacqueline Wilson books, including this one and the really touching aspect of this story is how one girl defends her handicapped sister. So I'll add the recommendation of a 40 year old man to the list!
